Little-known BenJarvus Green-Ellis gave the Patriots a boost in the tight AFC East race.

And he helped hand the free-falling Buffalo Bills a costly loss.

The undrafted rookie from Mississippi rushed for a career-high 105 yards and scored a touchdown for the fourth straight game and New England’s defense dominated in the second half for a 20-10 win on Sunday.

Green-Ellis began the season on the practice squad but is the Patriots’ top runner with Laurence Maroney on injured reserve and Sammy Morris missing the last three games and LaMont Jordan out for the last five.

“Wherever we are on the field, I just try to get it to the end zone,” Green-Ellis said. “That’s my job every play.”

He capped a 19-play drive with a 1-yard touchdown with 1:57 left long after Matt Cassel rushed for a 13-yard touchdown on the Patriots’ first series. Cassel, the steadily improving replacement for Tom Brady, directed the offense with poise and completed 23 of 34 passes for 234 yards.

The defense held the Bills to 58 yards in the second half—while the offense piled up 192. The Patriots had the only two interceptions of the game and outgained the Bills 370-168.

“When you don’t allow big plays, it definitely keeps control of the game in your favor,” cornerback Ellis Hobbs said.

The Patriots (6-3) moved a game ahead of the Bills (5-4), who are 1-4 since winning their first four games. The New York Jets routed St. Louis 47-3 and remained tied with New England. Miami (5-4) beat Seattle.

“We realized this was a big pivotal game,” Bills linebacker Paul Posluszny said. “We have to get a winning feeling and we don’t have that now.”

The loss—Buffalo’s 10th straight to New England—was especially harmful since the Bills had lost their previous two games against the Dolphins and Jets and dropped to 0-3 in division games. The Patriots are 2-1 against AFC East opponents and face the Jets and Dolphins in their next two games.

“It’s getting down to crunch time now,” Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi said.

After Green-Ellis’ score capped a 19-play drive, the Bills got their only touchdown on a 14-yard pass from Trent Edwards to James Hardy after an 85-yard kickoff return by Leodis McKelvin.

That was hardly enough against a strong defense.

The Patriots, on the other hand, say they aren’t thinking about the streak at all.

“The past has very little to do with anything in the future,” fullback Heath Evans said. “You can learn from mistakes made and the success you’ve had, but it still comes down to how well did you perform on that given Sunday. There’s not a lot of confidence from the past.”

New England’s nine straight wins against Buffalo is the second-longest current streak by a team against an opponent in the NFL. San Diego has won 10 in a row against Oakland and Pittsburgh’s taken 10 straight from Cleveland.

The Patriots have defeated the Bills 14 times in the last 15 games between the teams.

The Patriots won a franchise-record 11 straight against the Bills from 1982-87.

Raise your hand if back in training camp you thought every AFC East team would still have a realistic shot of winning the division at the season’s midway point.

Yeah, sure you did.

For those who kept their hands in front of them, you’re certainly not alone.

A head-spinning sequence of events has reshaped the AFC East, which was ruled for years by New England — with everyone else quite a few steps behind. Take away Tom Brady from the Patriots, add Brett Favre to the New York Jets and Chad Pennington to Miami, and the division has become a free-for-all.

“There’s four teams in this division, and they all control their own destiny,” Favre said. “It’s pretty good.”

The Patriots have plenty of company atop the division, with the Jets and Bills feeling good about their chances. The Dolphins are one of the NFL’s biggest surprises, with Bill Parcells and Tony Sparano quickly turning around a miserable culture of losing.

“It’s about as balanced as you can get at this point in the season,” Jets coach Eric Mangini said. “We all play each other here throughout the next eight games, and that’s going to decide it, I think.”

Miami and New York are 2-1 against division opponents with three games left, and New England is 1-1 with four games left, including two against Buffalo. The Bills have some work to do at 0-2.

“It’s not an easy path,” Mangini said, “for anybody.”

New England Patriots (5-3)

Brady’s knee injury in the season-opener was as catastrophic a loss as the Patriots could have imagined. Give them credit for staying competitive with unproven Matt Cassel running the show.

There’s no way a team can replace a star like Brady.

Cassel has been shaky, at best. He’s also working with an offense that hasn’t had a steady running back all season.

Laurence Maroney was lost early to an injury, and Sammy Morris and LaMont Jordan have also taken their turns on the sideline. Throw in BenJarvus Green-Ellis — undoubtedly one of the best names in sports — and Kevin Faulk, and Cassel probably isn’t sure who’s lining up behind him in the backfield anymore.

Cassel knows who he’s throwing to, though, and Randy Moss and Wes Welker are still dangerous.

The defense has proven vulnerable, especially with Rodney Harrison out for at least this season. With games against Pittsburgh, Arizona and the rest of the division in the second half, the season may hinge on whether the Patriots’ aging linebacker corps and young secondary can make enough big plays to overcome Cassel’s mistakes on offense.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady described the lingering effects of his injury late last season, saying Saturday that his ankle now feels really good, but he is still slow and can’t jump.

Speaking on the second day of the three-day mandatory minicamp, Brady said his off season training program has been somewhat limited by the fact that still does not lift a lot of weight. “That hasn’t changed,” NFL’s Most Valuable Player told reporters.

Brady, who turns 31 in August, first injured his ankle against San Diego in the AFC championship game. News of the injury broke when he was first photographed in New York wearing a protective boot two weeks before the Super Bowl.

The passing combos of Brady to Randy Moss and Wes Welker helped the Patriots go unbeaten in the regular season and two playoff games. But they were stunned in the Super Bowl by the New York Giants, 17-14.

Brady says the Patriots have moved on from the disappointing loss and are looking forward to improve in the next six weeks and then getting back together at the end of July month for training camp.

“There are a lot of new guys who weren’t a part of that, so they don’t bring any of those memories or that energy in here,” Brady said. Coach Bill Belichick has also been preaching to returning players “that what happened last year is something for us to learn from and move on from.”

“In life, you don’t reflect too much on what happened in the past. You try to learn

from it and build on it,” Brady said. “We can only control what we did today, which in this case was a really good practice.

Brady said he is happy that Moss agreed to return to New England after signing a three-year deal worth $27 million, saying his favorite target appears in great shape for the upcoming season.

Moss, who caught a record 23 TD passes from Brady during the season, had five receptions for 62 yards and a TD in the Super Bowl.

“Randy and I, we have a great relationship,” Brady said. “I know this is the place where he wanted to be and we wanted him. Usually the contract situations work out when that happens. He adds so much to this offense”

Brady also praised new tight end Marcus Pollard, a 14-year veteran who signed as a free agent in April after playing for the Seattle Seahawks last season.

Pollard had a chance to shine Saturday, with starting tight end Benjamin Watson and backup David Thomas both on rehabilitation from injuries this weekend and not on the field.

He hooked up with veteran backup quarterback Matt Cassel on a couple of nice plays during passing drills, including a long touchdown as he laid out to make the catch.

Pollard, who has played with some of the NFL’s best quarterbacks such as Peyton Manning of Indianapolis and Matt Hasselbeck at Seattle, now has a chance to hook up with Brady, the All-Pro quarterback.

“Marcus has done a great job coming in here and learning what we do. He’s been to a couple of different offenses but he seems like he’s picked this one up pretty quickly,” Brady said. “Just in the last few days he’s really taken to this offense and he’s made a bunch of plays in these camps.”

“I just wanted a chance to play and win some games,” Pollard, 36, said about his decision to join the Patriots. “They told me I’d have an opportunity here and I’m just looking to contribute in any way I can — special teams, blocking, wham blocking, whatever.”

Belichick said Pollard’s experience — has career totals of 349 catches and 40 touchdowns — is valuable.

“Marcus knows the passing game. He has a lot of experience in offenses such as Indianapolis’ and Mike Martz’s West Coast offense” while with Detroit, Belichick said.

Besides Watson, Thomas and Pollard, three other tight ends are competing for three, possibly four roster spots.

They include third-year player Stephen Spach, who played in three games last season after injuries decimated the tight end corps, and undrafted free agents Tyson DeVree of Colorado and Jonathan Stupar of Virginia.

“This team is going to take on an entire different appearance,” Brady said. “I hope what we put out there in the field is up to the championship level that we’ve put up in the past.”

Unfortunately, we have yet to see a picture of this, but I guess Randy Moss is going to be on an envelope? How cool is that? If anyone has seen this let us know, so we can see the picture and get it put up here on Randy Moss Club.

The United States Postal Service is rolling out a commemorative envelope honoring the former Marshall University football star and Rand’s most famous resident.
Moss will attend a ceremony at 2 p.m. Friday at the Cultural Center for the unveiling of the envelope.

He’ll be only the third West Virginia athlete to grace a special envelope issued by the postal service.

How cool. Keep it up Randy! We’d love to get that envelope!
